Cobras Pick up 9-3 Win over Paine

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Cobra baseball team picked up their first win of the 2010 season on Wednesday afternoon with a 9-3 victory over Paine College at Tom J. New Field in Hartsville. Coker hitters took advantage of several Paine miscues to secure the win, while the Cobra pitchers kept the Lions in check all game. The win improves the Cobras to 1-1 on the year, while Pain falls to 0-1.

Coker newcomer Tyler Witzel (Melbourne, Fla.) (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate appearance, allowing just one hit in three innings of relief, while striking out four.  Starter Mike Palko (Euclid, Ohio) threw four strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts, with Haddon Childs (Conway, S.C.) also show a strong performance on the mound, allowing no runs, no hits and striking out one in an inning of work.

Paine’s Evan Howard (0-1) took the loss, as he gave up seven runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings on the mound.

Leading the Coker offense was Jessie Crockett (North East, Md.) going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Matt Ammons (Chester, S.C.) and Brian Luchsinger (Farmingville, N.Y.) each had a hit and two RBIs. Brinley Griffin (Port St. John, Fla.) finished the day 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases and Trey Lynch (Florence, S.C.) was 1-for-4 with three RBIs.

Chris Alvarez was 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored to lead Paine, while Robert Dominy was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Coker will take the field again on Saturday as they host the Chowan University Hawks in a three game non-conference set. The first game of the Saturday double-header will begin at noon.
