Hartsville, SC- The Coker Baseball Team began their annual Blue and Gray World Series Wednesday, with a 5-2 victory for the Gray team.

 

It was a hard fought battle, with the Blue team scoring first with an RBI single from sophomore Will Poole in the second inning. Gray would answer with a run of their own in the fourth inning, when Eric Losten scored from third on ground out by Steve Evans. The score remained tied at one through the fifth, but in the top of the sixth the Gray team put two runs on the board off Blue reliever, Jayson Clarke. The Blue team had some opportunities in the bottom of the sixth, but could not capitalize, leaving a man stranded at third and having another man doubled off on a line drive to end the inning. The Gray team added two insurance runs in the seventh and the Blue team tried to rally in the bottom of the inning, but could only manage one run.

 

The Gray Team was lead by sophomore pitcher Brad Boob, who in five innings pitched scattered four hits, giving up one run and striking out four, earning the win for Gray. Helping Boob out on offense was senior Nic Fletcher, who went 2-4 with a triple and an RBI. Losten and sophomore Carlton Deese were each 1-3, while Losten also scored two runs and had a stolen base for the Gray team.

 

Leading the Blue team’s offense was Poole, going 2-2 with an RBI. Juniors Brian Nally, Mike Pictiewicz and Brian Johanson each went 1-3 on the day, with Pictiewicz and Johanson each scoring a run. Sophomore Kevin Ricuitti threw five strong innings for the Blue team, allowing only two hits and one run, while striking out four and giving up two walks. Clarke unfortunately took the loss throwing one inning and giving up two runs.

 

The Fall Blue and Gray Inter squad World Series is a best of three series and continues on Friday, October 21, at 3:30 p.m. Gray has the series lead 1-0.
