Hartsville, SC- The Coker Blue and Gray Fall World Series ended just as if it came right from a movie script. With two outs, base loaded, bottom of the seventh, instead of the ninth, and the game tied at three, the Gray Team’s Steve Evans stepped into the box. Facing the Blue Team’s number one pitcher, Kevin Ricuitti, Evans had a 1-2 count on him when he hit a Texas league fly ball to right-center that just fell in between the diving right and center fielders. The hit was good enough to give Gray a 4-3 win and give them the best of three series sweep over the Blue Team.

Evans was 2-4 on the day, with 2 RBI’s, a triple and a run scored. Also going 2-4 for the Gray Team was Ryan Schaeffer, with a double and a run scored. Ben Davidson was 2-2, with a double, triple and a walk.

Holding down the defense was pitchers Seth Weinberg and Stephen Dill. Weinberg allowed 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 strikeouts and 2 walks over five innings. Dill threw two innings, not allowing a hit or run through seven batters, with one strikeout and earning the win for the Gray team.

The Blue team was led by Tom Hamilton, who’s big 2 out, 2 run homerun in the top of the fifth gave the Blue Team a short lived 3-2 lead. Hamilton finished the day 1-2, with 3 RBI’s and a run scored. Willie Loverde was 2-3, while Dustin Dockter, TJ Dawson, Mike Pictiewicz and Steve Jackson each picked up a hit for the Blue Team.

Blue starter Craig Zumwinkle, threw four strong innings, allowing only four hits, two runs and two walks. Jesse Hatchel came on in relief in the fifth and threw two and a third innings, while taking the loss for the Blue Team, as his runner recorded the winning run for the Gray Team.  

The Coker Baseball Team will conclude fall practices this week and then begin small group and conditioning work until semester break.
