Aiken, SC- In their opening game of the 2006 season the Coker Cobras took on some pretty stiff competition facing #8 ranked USC-Aiken. Coker kept things close, but in the end the Cobras came up short losing 4-2.

Coker’s starting pitcher Brad Boob held the Pacers scoreless through the first three innings, before two errors, one by Boob and one by right fielder Steve Evans, started a three run inning for Aiken.

The Cobras would send out Jayson Clarke in the fifth and he too held the Pacers in check for an inning, but in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and facing a 1-2 count Aiken’s Chris Sheehan dropped a bomb on Coker over the right field wall, giving the Pacers a 4-0 lead.

Coker would try to make a come back in the seventh, as Seth Weinberg laced a single to center field that would score TJ Dawson from second, Evans also scored on the same play thanks to a throwing error from the Aiken first baseman.

In the end two runs is all the Cobras could get and Aiken’s Peden Rucker(1-0) would get the win with six innings pitched, while only allowing two hits and striking out six. Nick Wadeless (1) picked up the save and Coker’s Boob (0-1) took the loss.

Coker’s offense was led by Weinberg going 1 for 3 with an RBI, while junior Ryan Schaeffer also went 1 for 3, and seniors Nic Fletcher and Eric Losten each went 1 for 4.

For the Pacer’s Casey Derhak was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Zach Cooper was 2 for 4 with a run scored, and Sheehan was 1 for 4 with a HR.

Coker returns to action on Wednesday, February 8, as they host Newberry College at 2:30 p.m. USC-Aiken will host Lincoln Memorial at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 3.
