WILSON, NC -- Designated hitter Jimmy Metzinger rapped a two-run home run in the bottom of the 9th inning on a cold, breezy Saturday afternoon to give Barton a 10-8 win over visiting Coker in the CVAC baseball opener for both schools.

Coker rebounded to win the second game 4-1 for a split. The two teams square off again at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Barton is now 4-8 overall while Coker is 3-9

The opener was a slugfest, featuring 13 hits by Barton and 12 by the Cobras. Travis Holloman, Will Johnson, Jonathan Nichols, Quinn Fuller and Zach Boyette collected two hits apiece for Barton. Holloman and Boyette joined Metzinger with home runs and Ben Davidson went 2-for-4 with a homer for Coker. Brian Nally batted 2-for-3 and Julio Gomez was 3-for-4.

Kelly Stracke went the full nine innings for Barton. He allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked two. Chris Thomas took the loss in relief of starter Brad Bobb, who was chased in the seventh inning.

In the second game, Coker outhit Barton 8-5 and rode a complete-game, five-hit performance from Jasyon Clarke, who walked two and fanned one. Justin Bye went the full seven innings for Barton. He scattered eight hits, walked four and struck out four. Ryan Shaeffer and Ben Davidson homered for the Cobras. Seth Weinberg added two hits for Coker.

Cobras will conclude their series with Barton on Sunday, with a single game starting at 1:00 p.m.
