Hartsville, SC- In the deciding third game of their Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference baseball series, the Mount Olive Trojans defeated the Coker Cobras 13-5 on Sunday afternoon. With the win the Trojans took the series 2-1, and improved their record to 19-8 overall, and 7-2 in the CVAC, while Coker drops to 8-18 overall, and 3-6 in the CVAC.

 

Coker held a 3-2 lead through the fourth, but then in the fifth Mount Olive jumped on top with a two run inning, giving them a 4-3 lead. Then in the sixth, the Trojans exploded for six runs on six hits, and then tacked on another three runs in the seventh.

 

 Coker added a run in the sixth and seventh, cutting the led to just eight runs, but it would not be enough to overcome the Trojans lead.

 

Darrell Ellis earned the win for Mount Olive, going seven innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits with five strike outs.

 

Jesse Hatchell (2-1) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits, with three strike outs in 5 1/3 innings of work.

 

Leading the Cobras at the plate were Julio Gomez and Trey Lynch, with Gomez going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Lynch 2-for-4 with an RBI.

 

Mount Olive was led by Josh Carter, going 4-for-5 with two triples, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Erik Lovett was 4-for-6 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Scott Houin finished 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored. David Cooper also had three hits and an RBI on the day.

 

Coker returns to the diamond on Wednesday, when they host USC-Upstate at 2:30 p.m.
