The win gives Upstate an undefeated 11-0 mark at home against non-conference foes this season and improves its record to 18-14 this season. Coker falls to 10-23.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Spartans struck for two more runs in the second when junior first baseman Kyle Bowley scored on an error and senior shortstop John Caddell drove in freshman third baseman Jacob Breen (pictured) on a single to center field for a 3-0 lead.
The Cobras rallied with two runs in the third inning including center fielder Ty Medlin scoring on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from first baseman Ben Davidson to cut the lead to 3-2. Upstate built its lead back to three runs by scoring two in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single by Breen for a 5-2 lead.
Coker did manage a run in the sixth inning on a run-scoring single from Medlin, but did not threaten after that.
McCraney (2-1) bounced back after taking the loss in yesterday’s game at Pfeiffer for his second win of the year and Fournier picked up his first career save. Breen was 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Spartans and junior left fielder Mike Colecchi was 2-for-2 with a triple, the only extra base hit of the contest. Caddell finished 1-for-3 with a RBI.
Left fielder Brian Johnson was 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Cobras. Pitcher Matthew Conyers took the loss giving up three runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings pitched.
