Hartsville, S.C. - The Cobra Baseball Team faced the Flying Fleet of Erskine College in a Conference Carolinas double-header on Saturday afternoon in collegiate baseball. Erskine took game one, 10-2, only to follow up with an 8-4 victory in game two. Both games were shortened to seven innings due to the treat of rain. The losses bring Coker to 6-9 overall, and 1-4 in Conference Carolinas play, while Erskine improves to a perfect 14-0 overall, and 5-0 in the conference.

Game One

The Erskine Flying Fleet used two doubles, a pair of home runs and two Cobra errors to post nine runs in the first three innings. The Fleet tacked on a run in the fourth for an even 10 runs. Coker finally managed to crack the shut-out with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Brad Boob (Charlotte, NC) (2-3) took the loss for Coker, allowing nine runs on eight hits, with two strike outs in three innings of work.

Erskine hurler, Andrews Guests (3-0) earned the win going seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits, while striking out three.

For the Cobras at the plate in game one, Kyle Walker (Centralia, IL) was 3-for-4 with a double, while Julio Gomez (Santa Fe, NM) was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Leading the Fleet in game one was Chas Anthony, going 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and a run scored, while John Bolding was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Ross Hanna finished the game 1-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Game Two

In game two, Erskine jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top half of the first, thanks to a three-run homer from Anthony. Coker responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning and took a 4-3 lead in the second with the help of a RBI triple from Preston Ford (Cheraw, SC).

The Cobras held the narrow one run lead into the fifth, when Erskine’s Greg Huff belted the first pitch he saw over the left field fence tying the game. The Fleet plated three more runs in the fifth giving them a 7-4 advantage. Bolding secured the victory with a solo homer in the seventh for an 8-4 victory.

The Cobras’ Jesse Hatchell (Florence, SC) (1-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Atlee Pearson (2-0) earned the win coming on in relief. He held the Cobras scoreless in 3.1 innings of work, while allowing just two hits, with four strike outs.

At the plate in game two for Coker, Walker was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, while Gomez was 2-for-3 a run scored. Ford and Scott Amann (New Athens, IL) each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.

For Erskine, Matt Wurzer and Keith Hill were each 2-for-4, with Hill hitting a double and scoring a run, while Matt Schneider and Dereck King were each 2-for-3 with an RBI. Anthony and Bolding each finished the game 1-for-3 with a home run, with Anthony collecting three RBIs and Bolding picking up two RBIs.

Coker and Erskine will complete their three game series on Monday, at 2:30 p.m.
