HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobras did not get their 2010 season off to the start they had hoped, as they lost 12-3 to the Braves of UNC-Pembroke in a non-conference baseball game. The Cobras struggled in the opening innings allowing eight runs in the first two innings, but they were able to settle down, allowing just four runs down the stretch.
UNC-Pembroke (1-0) was able to keep the Coker (0-1)bats in check the entire day, allowing just seven hits on the day.
The Braves Matt McGovern (Ottawa, Canada) (1-0) earned the win allowing no runs, just three hits, while striking out five in six innings on the mound.
Coker’s Josh Daniels (Troy, Ill.) (0-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in four innings of work.
Keith Whitman (Elkin, N.C.) was the leading hitter for the Pembroke, going 2-for-5 with two home runs, five RBIs and two runs scored, while Kenny Mickens (Las Vegas, Calf.) was 3-for-6 with a home run, two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Joe Magnum (Charlotte, N.C.) finished the game going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored, with Tom Porricelli (Howell, N.J.) was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Aaron Parnell (Benson, N.C.) and Seth Kievett (Bear Creek, N.C.) each had two hits on the day.
The Cobras’ Trey Lynch (Florence, S.C.) had a stellar day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI, while Nick Fuoco (Palm Bay, Fla.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and Brinley Griffin (Port St. Jon, Fla.) was 1-for-4 and Jordan Buenting (Ankeny, Iowa) drove two of the Cobras runs of the day.
Coker returns to the diamond on Wednesday, when they host Paine College at 2:00 p.m. at Tom J. New Field.
