HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Five Coker pitchers combined to hold Paine College to just three runs in the Cobras 8-3 win over the Lions on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference baseball game. The win improves the Cobras to 5-7 on the season.
Jonathan Gainey (Hartsville, S.C.) (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Cobras. He went four innings allowing two runs while scattering six hits. From there it was up to the relief pitchers. Sean Tracy (Farmingville, N.Y.), Chris Garcia (Miami, Fla.) and Tyler Witzel (Melbourne, Fla.) threw an inning each, allowing a combined one run on two hits with four strikeouts, while Matt Bowman (Streator, Ill.) tossed two innings of relief allowing two hits with four strikeouts on his own.
Dalton Self took the loss for Paine. He threw a complete game allowing eight runs on 11 hits with four strikeouts.
At the plate for Coker, Nick Fuoco (Palm Bay, Fla.) had a double and two RBIS, while Matt Ammons (Chester, S.C.), Zach Barnes (Monticello, Ind.) and Chad Nader (Rock Hill, S.C.) each had two hits, with Ammons scoring two runs, Barnes scoring a run and Nader driving in a run. Rob Quattrock (Holtsville, N.Y.) also had a double and two RBIs.
Michael Thames, Christian Gaston and Jeffery Brown led the Lions with two hits apiece, Brown also drove in a run.
Coker is back in action this weekend for their first Conference Carolinas series of the season. The Cobras will play host to Belmont Abbey College starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and finishing up with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
