Mount Olive, N.C.Trayvon Lathan led four players in double figures with 24 points as Chowan defeated Coker 83-64 Friday in the first round of the 41st Annual Pickle Classic, hosted by Mount Olive College. Chowan advances to Saturday’s championship game, while Coker plays in the consolation game. The Hawks are in the championship game for the second year in a row.

Chowan (1-0) broke away from a 3-3 tie as Lathan’s dunk capped a 19-2 run and gave the Hawks a 22-5 lead with 12:07 left in the first half. Chowan built the lead to as many as 25 points in the half and led by double digits the remainder of the game. Mike Lowery hit a three-pointer for Coker with four seconds left, but still trailed Chowan 49-27 at halftime. Lathan had 18 points in the first half and was one of three Hawks in double figures before intermission.

Joe Brice’s three-pointer helped Chowan extend its lead to 62-36 with 10:29 left in the game. Coker (0-1) put together a run as Ben Brim’s three-pointer with 7:38 remaining pulled the Cobras within 67-49. But that would be as close as Coker would get as Chowan built the lead to as many as 25 points.

Marcus Artis finished with 17 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Chowan, while Brice added 15 points. Chris Kenon tallied 13 points and a game-high seven assists, while Lathan dished out six assists for the Hawks.

Jason Fullwood and Ryan Fullwood led Coker with 12 points apiece, while Brim finished with 11. Jason Fullwood and Lukas Varga dished out five assists apiece.

The consolation game tips off Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Kornegay Arena, followed by the championship game at 6:30 p.m.
