Hartsville, S.C. – Are you ready for some basketball? It is that time of year again, and no I don’t mean time for turkey and gifts, it is college basketball time and Coker College is ready to get things started. This weekend the Cobra men and women open their 2008-09 seasons and they are opening with a bang.
The Coker men will play a pair of Division I opponents in exhibition games starting Friday night as the Cobras take on the Pirates of East Carolina University at 7:00 p.m., while on Saturday they will travel to Coastal Carolina University to face the Chanticleers at 7:00 p.m.
Coach Carol Meegan and the Lady Cobras will also open their season on Saturday against a Division I opponent. The Coker women face Campbell University at 6:00 p.m. in a very special game as Campbell opens their new John W. Pope, Jr. Convocation Center. Coker will be the very first opponent to play in the new arena against the Camels.
Both teams will return Hartsville on Wednesday, November 18, for their home openers against Morris College, with the women tipping-off first at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m.
It should be an exciting year for Coker basketball, Coach Dan Schmotzer have added six new faces, including local high school standout, David Short (Darlington, SC), while returning 12 from last year’s squad that finished 9-19 overall, and 7-14 in Conference Carolinas play. Of the 12 returns, the Cobras have four seniors and one All-Conference selection, Mason Ambler (Atlanta, GA).
On the women’s side, Coach Meegan has brought in the addition of six new players to join her 10 returners, including lone senior, Jessica Hayes (Beaufort, SC) and All-Conference selection, Henna Koponen (Vantaa, Finland). Last season the Lady Cobras finished with a record of 6-21 overall, and 5-15 in the conference.
Fans who wish to see the Cobras play even when they can’t make it to Hartsville can now watch Coker basketball games LIVE via internet webcasts. Coker and the rest of Conference Carolinas have contracted with Penn Atlantic to webcast all Conference Carolinas basketball games.
