COLUMBUS, GA...Defending national champion USC Aiken fired an opening-round 292 here Monday to take the first-round lead in the Southeast Regional at the Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional at Bull Creek's West Course. Belmont Abbey fired a 303 to lead the Atlantic side by two shots over second-place Queens University. Host Columbus State is tied for third in the Southeast portion after firing an opening round 307.
In the Southeast Regional, Aiken got another solid round from Dane Burkhart as he fired a two under-par 70 to lead the field. He is the only player in the entire field of 90 players to break par on the day. Teammate Scott Brown is at level-par 72, tied with Francis Marion's Aengus McAllister and Columbus State's Omar Sanchez.
Armstrong Atlantic State got top-10 performances from three players and is in second place, five shots off the lead. CSU and Francis Marion are tied in third, while GC & SU (311) is fifth, Presbyterian (324) is sixth, and UNC Pembroke and North Greenville tied for seventh at 327.
On the Atlantic side, Pfeiffer's David Harris leads the individual standings after an even-par 72. Belmont Abbey's Tony DeCaro and Will Wilson, along with Will Henderson of Queens are tied for second after shooting 74.
Queens University is at 305 in second place, followed by Barton (316), Coker (318), and Pfeiffer (319). Fayetteville State (323), Anderson (326), and St. Andrews Presbyterian (330) round out the eight-team field.
The winner of each regional will advance, followed by the next three top-scoring teams, regardless of region. The top scoring individual not on an advancing team will also earn a spot in the Division II Championship.
Round Two of the Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional will begin at 8 AM on Tuesday at Bull Creek. The Atlantic teams will begin on hole number one, while the Southeast teams will begin play on hole number 10. Follow live scoring of the event by logging on to www.golfstat.com.
