CLEMMONS, N.C. -- Five shots separate the first six teams after the first round of the Conference Carolinas Men's Golf Championships at the Salem Glen Country Club on Sunday. Upstart St. Andrews joined nationally 22nd-ranked Belmont Abbey and No. 32 Coker at 12-over 296 in a three-way deadlock for the lead after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event.

Anderson University (SC) is one shot back of the lead at 297, Mount Olive is two back at 298 and defending champ Barton is five back at 301. Pfeiffer and Queens are still in contention at 305, Limestone carded a 310 and Lees-McRae tallied 344 in the 10-team event.

The low individual is Belmont Abbey sophomore Connor Tomlinson, who shot 4-under 32 on the front nine and had it 5-under before finishing at 2-under 69 on the par-71 layout. Six players are tied at 71, including Trey Bridwell and Jimmy Gilliam of Coker, Johan Hagsund and Mick Moberg of Mount Olive, Alfred Kristinsson of St. Andrews and Kurt Owings of Anderson.

Tied for 8th place are defending conference champ and 2008 Conference Carolinas Player of the Year Jonathan Burke of Barton, Queens' Iain Hall, who was third at last year's NCAA D-II National Championships, and Dwight Meeker of St. Andrews.

Play begins for the men off the 10th tee at 8:30 a.m. Monday. The first wave of teams wil lbe Queens, Limestone and Lees-McRae from 8:30 to 9:10, followed by Mount Olive, Barton and Anderson from 9:20 to 10:00 and St. Andrews, Belmont Abbey, Coker and Anderson from 10:10 to 10:50. Women's teams will begin play at 8:50 off the No. 1 tee.
