HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker men's soccer team closed out the regular season portion of its schedule with a decisive 6-1 win over the Brevard Tornados on Saturday (Nov. 2) night in South Atlantic Conference action. With the win the Cobras secured their spot in the SAC Tournament as the No. 5 seed with a record of 6-4-1 in conference and 9-5-2 overall.
The scoring got started very early as the Tornados took a 1-0 lead off a header by Ryan McPhillips in the third minute of the game. The Cobras wasted no time answering the challenge with a one-timer goal by Daniel Jackson from Stephen Scrivens just two minutes later.
The Cobras were not done scoring yet as they tacked on two more goals before the intermission. The first in the 15th minute on a long shot by Matt Taylor with an assist from Chris Martin, and the second coming from the duo of Jackson and Scrivens once again.
Coker quickly added to its lead in the second half as Jackson earned his second hat trick of the season with his unassisted goal in the 57th minute. Three minutes later Atticus Lum buried a header off a corner from Tony Quiroz to make it 5-1 in favor of Coker. In the 75th minute Jackson scored yet again, this time with an assist from Quiroz for a 6-1 Cobra lead. Jackson's goal set a new record for goals in a single season at Coker with 14.
The Cobras will return to the pitch on Tuesday (Nov. 5) for the quarterfinals of the SAC Tournament. Coker will travel to Lincoln Memorial University to face the No. 4 seed Railsplitters.
