
HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker men's volleyball team defeated Lees-McRae 3-1 in a Conference Carolinas competition on Saturday (Mar. 2). Coker is currently on a three game win streak.
As the first set started both teams exchanged points evenly, as neither team could take more than a two-point lead. Midway through the set, Coker had a slight 11-10 lead. Then in an offensive surge the Cobras went on a 6-0 run to take a 17-10 advantage. The navy and yellow would not let up, and went on to take control of the first set 25-21.
The momentum carried into the second set for Coker, when the Cobras when on a 7-0 run to start the set. The Bobcats would close the gap to three, but that is as close as they would get as Coker proceeded to take a 2-0 advantage after winning the second set 25-18.
Lees-McRae however would not fold easily. The Bobcats took the first 8-of-11 points, and kept the pace throughout the third set. Lees-McRae quickly capture the third set 25-18 to trail just 2-1.
The fourth set proved to be the most competitive set of the night, as the two teams battled to a 25-25 tie. Coker would take a one-point lead, but then surrender a point to tie the game again at 26. The Cobras would then go on to win the next two points and take the set 28-26, and the game 3-1.
As a team the Cobras recorded 44-kills, compared to 33 Lees-McRae kills. Coker also racked up 24-digs and 13-blocks.
Jared Geizer was the game leader in kills with 19. Luke Hansen had 12-kills of his own, along with seven digs. Ricardo Ferrer had the match high 35-assists, while Chris Thomas had a match and season high four blocks.
Coker will travel to Barton on Wednesday (Mar. 6) to take on the Bulldogs in their next competition. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start time.
