HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The 2013-14 Coker College women's basketball schedule not only marks the first year of competition in the prestigious South Atlantic Conference, but also features a game at Cameron Indoor Stadium against the Duke University Blue Devils.
After taking on Southeastern Conference opponents in the University of Kentucky and University of Tennessee to open the season each of the last two years, the Cobras will move to the Atlantic Coast Conference to take on Duke in a season-opening exhibition at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3 at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.
"We are very excited to be able to play Duke this year," said Coker head coach Jenny Finora. "It is going to be a great experience for our team. The Blue Devils are always a top ranked team year-in and year-out, not to mention we are all thrilled to get the opportunity to play at historic Cameron Indoor Stadium."
The Cobras will be facing a Blue Devil squad that went 33-3 last season and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. They were the 2013 ACC Champions and finished the season as the No. 5 team in the nation.
Following their exhibition against Duke, the Cobras begin regular-season action at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 at home against former Conference Carolinas foe Pfeiffer University. Coker will begin its first season of play in the SAC on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Newberry College.
In all, the Cobras will play 22 South Atlantic Conference games and three non-conference opponents, Pfeiffer, UNC Pembroke and Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Last season, the Cobras went 18-11 overall and 14-8 in Conference Carolinas action. Having lost just a handful of players from last season, the 2013-14 season looks to be another strong one for the women.
"The 2013-14 season is shaping up to be one for the record books," said Finora. "Between starting the season at Duke and playing our first year in the SAC, we are ready for a great year. We have a great group coming back, and some new players that are really going to help us make this season one to remember."
