INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Austin Akins earned eight place honors at the 35th Annual Midwest Classic on Sunday (Dec. 15) afternoon.
After advancing to the quarterfinals of the championship round on Saturday, Akins returned to the mat on Sunday in the consolation round. In his first match of the day, the 285-pounder narrowly lost to Chris Giddens of UNC Pembroke in double-overtime, 4-3. The loss dropped Akins to the seventh place match where he faced Courtney Freeman of the University of Cumberlands.. Freeman pinned Akins to take home the win, giving Akins eighth place in the 285-pound division.
The Cobras will now take a break for the holidays, returning to the mats after the New Year on Jan. 4 for a dual match at Newberry College.
