Coker Falls Short to No. 19 UNCP 28-19

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Cobra wrestling team narrowly lost its regional match to No. 19 UNC Pembroke, 28-19, on Thursday (Jan. 16) night.

Coker jumped out to an early 10-0 lead thanks to pin by Mikel Nelson just 54 seconds into his match at the 125-pound division, and a major decision, 16-4, by Charlie Huff at the 133-pound division. After a loss at the 141-pound division, Kevin Thompson picked up his team leading seventh pin of the season at the 149-pound division to give Coker a 16-3 lead.

Back-to-back-to-back pins by the Braves, along with a major decision and a decision, put the match out of Coker's reach.

Austin Akins closed out the match with a 2-0 win at the 285-pound division for Coker, making it a 28-19 match.

The Cobras will return to the mat on Tuesday (Jan. 21) for their final home match of the season against the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Coker’s Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium.
