COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Coker women’s tennis team picked up their first win of the 2010 season, with a 7-2 victory over Columbia College on Tuesday afternoon. A pair of wins in doubles and five straight singles victories improved the Lady Cobras to 1-4 on their young season.

Coker got things started with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with scores of 8-4 in both matches, with Alyssa Blanchard (Columbia, S.C.) and Stephanie Medley (Sumter, S.C.) earning the win at No.1 and Kendall Sigmon (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) and Stephanie Harrelson (Bishopville, S.C.) took home the win at No. 2.

Then the Lady Cobras took their winning ways into their singles matches, as the ladies earned wins at No. 2, No.3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Two of the most impressive wins came at No. 4 and No. 6 singles,, with both players coming from behind to win their matches. At No. 4, Brittany Yando (Sumter, S.C.) dropped the first set 2-6, but battled back to win the next two sets 6-3 and 10-4. Then at No. 6 single, Emma Hayes (Hartsville, S.C.) lost her first set 4-6, but she bounced back to win the next two sets 6-1 and 10-6.

The Lady Cobras return to the courts on Friday, when they play host to their first home match of the season, hosting Newberry College at 2:00 p.m.
