Catawba, NC- The Coker Volleyball team opened the 2006 season on a less than positive note, losing to St. Augustine College 3-0 in their first game at the Catawba College Volleyball Tournament on Friday night. With scores of 30-21, 30-28 and 30-25, St. Augustine swept the Cobras, who were picked to third in the CVAC preseason poll.

Things got were bad from the first serve, as the Cobras were unable to get ahead in the first game at all and then were only able to lead by a few times in the next two games. Coker’s biggest lead of the night was two points.

Leading the Coker attack was junior Megan Haupt with 12 kills, followed by fellow junior Margaret Madison with 11 kills. Senior Tara Nelson had 35 assists and 11 digs, while senior Ashley Schaum had 14 digs in the match.

The Volleyball team will look to bounce back from a very disappointing first match as they take on Wingate University at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by UNC-Pembroke at 4 p.m. in their second and third games of the Catawba Volleyball Tournament.
