NEWBERRY, S.C. – In their inaugural game, the Coker College JV Baseball team lost to the Newberry College JV team 7-5. First year head coach Kyle Rayl and the JV Cobras scored three runs in the sixth and a pair of runs in the ninth, but were unable to pick up the win.

Sophomore Cody Ellison (New Ellenton, S.C.) (0-1) took the loss as the starting pitcher for Coker. Ellison went two innings, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout, while Matt Mege (1-0) earned the win for Newberry, going two innings, allowing no runs and no hits with four strikeouts.

At the plate for Coker, TJ Cochran (Warrenville, S.C.), Chad Nader (Rock Hill, S.C.), Tom Peterson (Columbia, S.C.), Mike Zinkann (Charlotte, N.C.) and Martin Gasque(Marion, S.C.) each had a hit for the Cobras. Cochran, Zinkann and Gasque each drove in a run and Peterson, Nader, Nic Trianni (Delanson, N.Y.) each scored a run and Russ White (Marion, S.C.) scored two runs.

The Coker JV team will return to the field on Thursday, Feb. 18, when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Spartanburg Methodist College in a double-header starting at 1:00 p.m.
