HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Daniel Hiatt (Elwood, Ind.) had two hits and drove in a run in the Cobras’ 13-2 loss to the UNC Pembroke Braves on Wednesday afternoon in collegiate baseball. The Braves used 15 hits and eight solid innings of pitching to secure the victory.
Brantley Hattrich (1-0) earned the win on the mound, tossing three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts for UNCP.
Tyler Witzel (Melbourne, Fla.) (0-1) took the loss. He gave up five runs on six hits with four strikeouts in two innings of work.
The first inning of play seemed as if it was going to be a very close game as the Cobras and Braves exchanged pairs of runs in the first, but that would be the only runs that Coker would muster. Pembroke would add a run in the second, two in the third, another three in the fifth and five in the ninth to take home the 13-2 victory.
Helping Hiatt on the offensive side of the ball for the Cobras were Matt Ammons (Chester, S.C.), Nick Fuoco (Palm Bay, Fla.), Jake Frazier (Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.) and Fico Kondla (Miami, Fla.) who each had a hit in the game. Ammons and Fuoco each scored a run as well.
Jason Coker led the Braves at the plate going 3-for-6 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Eitan Maoz was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Keith Whitman was a perfect 2-for-2 and Josh Haley, Joe Mangum Brandon Huffman and Aaron Parnell each had a double. J.J. Williams drove in a pair of runs, as did Haley and Brad Bridgeman had a pinch hit triple.
The Cobras will head back to the diamond for a three-game weekend series at Anderson University starting with a double-header on Saturday at noon.
