HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College women's basketball team was voted No. 9 in the South Atlantic Conference preseason coaches' poll, the league office announced today.
Last year, the Cobras finished 18-11 overall and 14-8 in their last season of play in Conference Carolinas. The Cobras' season ended to Mount Olive College in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
The Cobras return three seniors this season in Jasmine Evans, Jessica Cohen and Patricia Sullivan. Also returning to the court are five juniors – Priscilla Fenty, Heidrun Kristmundsdottir, Hailey Yohn, Kelley Godbout and Tiffani Stephens – and one sophomore, Aneka Dixon. In addition, head coach Jenny Finora added nine players to this year's squad.
Coker women's basketball begins its season Sunday, Nov. 3 at Duke University in an exhibition game. The Cobras open the regular season at home versus Pfeiffer on Saturday, Nov. 9.
Newberry College took first place in the coaches' poll with 114 overall points and five first-place votes. Lenoir-Rhyne University took second place with 112 overall points and four-first place votes. Wingate University was third with 96 points and two first-place votes, while Catawba College had 93 points and one first-place vote. The entire preseason poll is as follows:
