Wolves Come from Behind to Defeat Wingate 6-4

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The No. 5 seed Newberry Wolves scored five runs in the top of the sixth to post a come-from-behind 6-4 win over the No. 4 seed Wingate Bulldogs on Thursday (Apr. 23) at the 2015 South Atlantic Softball Championship.

After falling behind 3-0, the Wolves scored a run in the fifth and five more in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. Wingate trimmed the lead to two with a run in the seventh, but Newberry held on for the 6-4 win.

Brittany Middleton (7-8) earned the win in relief. She tossed five innings, allowing one run on seven hits.

Miranda Paul (5-4) suffered the loss. She gave up four runs on four hits with three strikeouts in five and a third innings in the circle.

Cassie Harrell led the way for the Wolves at the plate going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. Also driving in two runs for Newberry was Maude McCourry, while Ann Dee Priest drove in a run.

Wingate’s Emily Usiak was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Alexis Burrell was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.

The Wolves advance to take on the No. 1 seed Carson-Newman at 12:30 p.m. on Friday (Apr. 24), while Wingate will take on Coker in an elimination game also at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
