Hartsville, SC- The Coker Cobras Baseball Team opened their 2008 season with a win and a loss, splitting their double-header against the Chowan University Hawks on Saturday afternoon. Chowan took home game one with a 14-4 victory, but Coker was able to win game two in the bottom of the seventh inning, 6-5. Coker is now 1-1 on the year, while Chowan is also 1-1.

In game one, Chowan posted four runs in the second inning and 10 runs in the fourth inning, giving them a commanding lead and putting them in the driver’s seat for the rest of the game. Coker was able to scrape together four runs, one in the second inning and three in the sixth.

The Hawks Bryan Hill (1-0) earned the win, while Coker’s Brad Boob (0-1) took the loss.

In game number two, Coker scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring home a 6-5 victory. Kyle Walker drove home the winning runs for Coker with a single scoring Taylor Evans and pinch runner Matt Ammons.

Mikael Owens (1-0) earned the win coming on for an inning of relief work for Coker, while Chowan’s Brandon Hamlet (0-1) took the loss.

Leading the Cobras at the plate for the day was Preston Ford, going 3-for-4, while Scott Amman was 3-for-6. Karl Ankersen and Trey Lynch were each 2-for-5.

For Chowan, Billy Walling was 4-for-6 and Nate Mitchell was 3-for-5. Matt Crane and PJ Sadler each picked up three hits apiece in the double-header.

Coker and Chowan complete their three game series on Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
