Hartsville, SC- The Coker College Baseball Team lost their opening series of the season, as they fell in game number three 10-1 to Chowan University on Sunday afternoon in collegiate baseball. The loss drops the Cobras to 1-2 overall, while Chowan improves to 2-1.

Chowan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Coker was able to even things up in the second inning with a run of their own. The Hawks plated their second run of the game in the third inning and the score remained 2-1 through the fourth, but Chowan opened the flood gates in the fifth inning.

The Hawks scored eight runs on six hits and two errors in the top of the fifth inning, giving them a commanding 10-1 lead.

Earning the win for the Hawks was Chris Nelson (0-1) giving up just one run on 5 hits, with two strike outs in six innings of work.

Chris Thomas (Bluffton, SC) (0-1) took the loss for Coker going 5.1 innings allowing 10 runs, four earned, on eight hits, with three strike outs and three walks.

Leading the Cobras at the plate was, Preston Ford (Cheraw, SC) going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Julio Gomez (Santa Fe, NM) was 2-for-4. Karl Ankersen (Mt. Pleasant, SC) was 1-for-2 with a double for Coker.

For the Hawks, Brian Hill was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, while David Hughes was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. PJ Sadler was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored and Billy Walling was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

The Cobras return to the diamond on Tuesday, as they host Benedict College at 3:00 p.m.
