Murfreesboro, N.C. - In their first games of the 2009 season, the Coker Cobras baseball team defeated the Chowan University Hawks 10-1 in game one and 13-6 in game two. The wins start the Cobras off on the right foot, improving to 2-0 overall, while Chowan drops to 0-2.
In game one, it was a seven run third inning, a pair of home runs and six shut out innings that gave Coker their first win. Jesse Hatchell (Florence, SC) (1-0) earned the win, going five strong innings, allowing four hits with three strike outs and no runs, while Tom Oschip (Concord, OH) tossed a scoreless sixth inning, giving up just one hit with a pair of strike outs.
Offensively for Coker, Taylor Evans (Arvada, CO) was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while freshman Brinley Griffin (Port St. John, FL) was 2-for-4 with a two run homerun, three RBIs and a run scored in his first collegiate game. Kyle Walker (Centralia, IL) was 2-for-3 with a homerun, two RBIs and a stolen base. Ellis Logeman (Suwanee, GA), BK Harfst (Arvada, CO) and Ricky Deleandro (Mentor, OH) each had a pair of hits and a run scored.
In the game two it was Walker leading the offense yet again, as he was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Evans was 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Kevin Schlange (Carson City, NV) was 2-for-4 with a homerun, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, while Griffin, Karl Ankersen (Mt. Pleasant, SC), Trevin Taber (Chesnee, SC), and Trey Lynch (Florence, SC) each had two hits, with Griffin and Taber picking up RBI’s and scoring a run.
On the mound, Justin Collier (Laurens, SC) (1-0) earned the win, tossing 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Also, getting good outings for the Cobras were Josh Daniels (Troy, IL) and Jonathan Gainey (Hartsville, SC), as Daniels threw two scoreless innings with a strikeout and Gainey tossed a scoreless inning as well.
Coker returns to the diamond on Tuesday, as they travel to Claflin University for a 2:00 p.m. game.
