Cobras Set for Home Opener Against Newberry

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College softball team will make their home debut on Sunday (Feb. 10), against Newberry College in a double-header.  A live broadcast of the competition will be available at

Coker is expected to be strong at the plate this season, with senior shortstop Jaclin Poole leading the way.  In 2012, Poole had a batting average of .338 along with 12-doubles, four home runs, 30-RBIs and 26-runs.  Adding even more strength to the Cobra lineup will be first team all-conference winner Sydney Weatherford, and second team all-conference winners Stacy Burr and Bryant McLendon

Coker's defense will be led by pitchers Lauren Phillips , Logan Cox, Breanna Skipper, and McLendon.

The Cobras will return 7-of-9 starters to the filed this season, adding junior third basemen Lauren Brailsford and freshman third baseman Ashley Gallman to the starting lineup.  

Newberry is entering Sunday's game with a record of 3-1 on the year, with their latest competition being a 1-0 victory against Francis Marion.  The Wolves will be led by Brittany Phillips, who was named to the second team preseason all-SAC.  Phillips hit .342 last season, with 51-hits, 29-runs, and an on base percentage of .372.

The first game will begin at 1 p.m. on the Saleeby-Stokes softball field, followed by the second game of the day starting at 3 p.m.
