COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Coker University men's golf team finished tied for fifth with No. 18 Saint Leo at the Cougar Invitational on Tuesday (Sept. 27).
After 36 holes and a 586 as a team yesterday, the Cobras turned in a 295 today through 18 holes. Killian Ryan shot an even 70 today to lead the Cobras and finish 19th individually, while Jonathan Hallinger shot 73 (+3) and Caleb Tidd shot 75 (+5) to each finish in a tie for 20th individually. Fred Tindale turned in a 78 for the day, while Derek McGlaughlin turned in a 77 to round the day out for the Cobras.
"I think all of us agree that this was just a mediocre performance by our standards," said head coach John Hackney. "We're going into every event wanting to come out on top. With that being said, this was a strong field and we beat some very good teams on an extremely difficult golf course that gave some great players fits because of its deep rough and lightning- fast greens. Only two players broke par for 54 holes, which is unusual, and the winning team shot 19-over par when the norm nowadays is around 20-under for the winning team.Killian had a nice tournament. He got hot down the stretch today and posted the fourth-best score of the day at even par 70 with five birdies. Johnny continued to hit a lot of greens and carded a 73 while Caleb, despite hitting just four greens, was a scrambling wizard in shooting 75. This was just our first event and we have high expectations. We made a few too many mistakes but I am sure we will clean that up moving forward. We averaged 31 putts, hit 50 percent of the fairways and 57 percent of the greens for the event."
The Cobras return to the course on Monday, Oct. 3 at the Camden Collegiate at Camden Country Club in Camden, S.C.
