Wilson, NC - Coker Men’s Tennis took on three schools in North Carolina and returned with one win and two losses. Coker Men fell to the nation’s 25^th ranked Barton 9-0 and current regular season CVAC champions Mount Olive 8-1. Team moral was lifted with a solid 7-2 win over Chowan College.

The first match with Barton was very one sided as Barton took control early with three comfortable doubles wins. Barton’s strength in depth was proved in singles as they closed out singles victories on each court for the loss of no more than 5 games. The exception came at 1 singles where Matt Byford fell 6-3 7-5 in a closely fought match.

The team next took on Chowan and raced to a 3-0 lead with some good doubles. Byford and Duncan Grew teamed up at 1 doubles for an impressive 8-0 win. Danny Nash and Dustin Yager came through at 2 doubles with an 8-5 win. In singles, Tim Morton and Dustin Yager had comfortable wins to seal the victory for Coker. In the remaining singles matches, Duncan Grew stood out as he battled fatigue to come through 10-7 in a final set tie-breaker at 1 singles.

Mount Olive, NC - Coker traveled to Mount Olive on Sunday and suffered an 8-1 defeat. The lone win for Coker came at 4 singles where Danny Nash was leading 6-0 1-0 before his opponent retired. Dustin Yager looked good in winning the opening set 6-4 at five singles but eventually fell 10-4 in a final set tie-breaker.

It was one of the toughest weekends the team will face this season but should prepare them well for some important upcoming matches. The Cobra Men move to 2-5 for the season and next play Newberry away, starting at 2.30pm on Thursday before taking on Belmont Abbey at home this Saturday at 1p.m.
