Staab Moves to Semifinals at ITA Fall Regional
Coker men's tennis player, Andre Staab earned two more victories to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Fall Regional on Saturday (Sept. 28).
SUMTER, S.C. – Coker's Andre Staab is not only the first-ever Cobra men's tennis player to be nationally ranked (No. 31) by ITA, but he is now the first-ever Cobra to advance to the semifinals of the ITA Fall Regional.
Staab continued his successful play at the ITA Fall Regional with two more wins in men's singles A division on Saturday (Sept. 28). Staab started the day with a 6-1, 6-2 win over USC Aiken's Andy Quirk. He then went on to defeat Armstrong's Luca Cerin, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals. Staab will now face the No. 4 seed Pedro Scocuglia from Armstrong at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday (Sept. 29). The winner will advance to play on Monday (Sept. 30) at 9 a.m.
Also advancing in the tournament on Saturday was William Marrafao with two victories in the consolation round. He defeated Jack West of Erskine 4-1; he then knocked off Taylor Powell of Georgia College and State University in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 12-10. Marrafao will now face Georgia Regents' Victor Cabellos at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.
In doubles action, Marrafao and Martin Moncayo advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-6 win over the No. 5 seed Richard Ashforth and Gavin Davison from Francis Marion. The Coker duo will take on Columbus State's Marco Almorin and Adi Malicbogeic at 8 a.m. on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
The Cobras will continue play at the ITA Fall Regional through Monday.
