HARTSVILLE, S.C. - Coker University has named Steven Welsh its interim head softball coach, Dr. Lynn Griffin, vice president of athletics and facilities, announced today.
"We are excited for Steven to lead our softball program during this transition," said Griffin. "He has already made a strong impact on our student-athletes through his work ethic, knowledge of the game, and commitment to player development. Steven brings a genuine passion for helping young women succeed both on the field and in the classroom, and we are confident in his ability to guide the program moving forward."
Welsh joined the Coker softball staff in July 2025 after serving as assistant coach and pitching coach at Fayetteville State University during the 2024-25 season, where he implemented innovative training systems and development programs that helped elevate the Broncos' pitching staff. His ability to combine analytics, preparation, and individualized instruction played a key role in improving performance in the circle throughout the season.
Prior to his time at Fayetteville State, Welsh spent three seasons at Southeastern Community College from 2021-24, also serving as assistant coach and pitching coach. During his tenure, he helped develop multiple student-athletes while contributing to all aspects of the program, including recruiting, player development, scouting, and practice planning.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead this program," said Welsh. "I'm excited to continue building relationships with our players and helping them compete at a high level while representing the university the right way."
Welsh's coaching career began in the travel ball ranks, where he served as a head coach from 2017-21. During that time, he helped mentor and develop athletes both on and off the field while building competitive and fundamentally sound teams.
Before transitioning into coaching full-time, Welsh served in the military, an experience that helped shape his leadership style and commitment to accountability, preparation, and team culture. His military background continues to influence the structure and discipline he brings to his coaching philosophy.
Welsh earned his bachelor's degree in political science from University of Maryland in 2017 before completing a master's degree in public administration from Villanova University in 2018.
