Hartsville, S.C. – With a 41 point second half come back, the Coker Lady Cobras brought home their first win of the season on Tuesday night, defeating Morris College, 76-63. The win improves Coker to 1-1 on the year, while Morris evens their record at 3-3.
The Hornets came out firing and used the inside presence of Erica Wilkerson to rack up some easy points and take as much as a ten point lead in the first half. Then in the final three minutes, Lotta Aaltonen (Rauma, Finland) and Heidi Rienstra (Brockville Ontario) combined for 11 points to bring the Lady Cobras to within just a point as they entered halftime.
In the second half, Coker returned right where they left off at the end of the first, as Aaltonen and fellow countryman, Henna Koponen (Vantaa, Finland) turned up the heat and the defense, leading Coker as they shot 54.8 percent from the floor, while holding the Hornets to just 33.3 percent.
Koponen finished the game with 20 points, as the Lady Cobras leading scorer, while Aaltonen had 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. Senior Jessica Hayes (Beaufort, SC) chipped in 11 points and team leading seven rebounds, with Megan Thomas (Cresskill, NJ) dishing out six assists.
For Morris, Wilkerson was the leading point getter with 22 points, while Tyneshia Eaddy had double-double, netting 15 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.
The Lady Cobras return to the floor on Saturday, Nov. 22, as they travel to Charleston, SC, to face their second of three Division I schools this season. Coker will face Charleston Southern at 5:30 p.m.
