GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Coker College wrestling team dropped its South Atlantic Conference Carolinas matchup with Limestone on Tuesday (Jan. 8) by a score of 31-13.
The Cobras jumped out to an early lead led by the efforts of John Watts at 125 pounds. Watts grabbed a pair of early takedowns and took a 10-4 lead into the final period. After a valiant effort by James Sass of Limestone, Watts closed rode out a 12-8 decision to give the Cobras a 3-0 lead. Chris Poland followed up Watts' win with a strong showing at 133, going wire-to-wire for the win. After getting out to a 4-2 lead, Poland picked up the final five points in the bout to pick up a 9-4 decision.
Brett Shurina got the Cobras back on the board with an impressive showing at 165. Shurina came out of the gates on fire with flurry of takedowns in the first period to lead 12-10. Over the final two periods of action Shurina was in control, finishing it off with a 22-14 major decision.
Limestone would make a run over the final four matchups to seal the victory.
The Cobras will be back in action on Friday (Jan. 11) when they host the Coker Duals at the DeLoach Center with matches set to begin at 8:00 AM.
