Cobras Comeback Late to Take Down Queens

Cobras Comeback Late to Take Down Queens

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College wrestling team captured their first dual in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas action on Sunday (Feb. 3), taking down the Royals 22-16.

John Watts put the Cobras on the board early, as usual, with an 8-6 decision at 125 pounds. Chris Poland followed it up with a win of his own at 133 pounds. Poland took control of his matchup and walked away with a 9-4 decision. The Royals would put the Cobras on the ropes after taking the next four weight classes and pulling out to a 16-6 lead midway through the dual. At 174 pounds Bret Shurina stepped up when the Cobras needed him the most as Shurina looked dominant in a 12-2 major decision. Not once did Shurina surrender a takedown as he went wire-to-wire for the win. Next up in one of the turning points of the match Seth Spell held his own at 184 pounds. Spell picked up an early takedown but looked to be in a bad spot after a reversal before Spell pulled a reversal of his own. In the end Spell would walk away with a clutch 8-2 decision, pulling the Cobras within three with just two wrestlers remaining. At 197 pounds, Marco Mason Jr. looked to be heading for a decision as he was up 5-0 before winning by way of disqualification and picking up six team points to give the Cobras the lead once again. In the final matchup of the day Dalton Haywood manhandled his oponent at 285 pounds, taking a 5-0 decision to seal the Coker win.

The Cobras will be back in action on Sunday (Feb. 10) when they travel to King for a 3:00 PM dual.
