How It Happened
The Cobras found themselves on the wrong end of the stick in a doubles point loss to open up play. Bellegy and Banning won on Court 1 in a massive 6-1 outing to put the Cobras up, but Newberry was able to put away courts two and three to take the victory and head up 1-0. There were quick results on a few of the singles courts, with Hernandez-Sanchez and Banning winning in dominant straight sets for Coker to take the lead at 2-1.
With a loss on Court 5, the Cobras took back the lead at 3-2 after Bellegy took the win on Court 1. She fell down 3-0 in the first set but won six games in a row to take the advantage, then won a dominant 7-1 tiebreak at six games all in the second set to claim the victory. After her match, a loss on Court 4 had us all even at 3-3 and, yet again, it was up to Myers to put it away.
Myers had dropped her opening set 4-6 but started off the second well to head up 4-1. Her opponent battled back and tied at five games all, but Myers broke her opponent and held serve to win that set and even it up at a set apiece. She then took control, cruising to a 6-2 victory in set three to win it for herself and her team yet again!
Notable
- This win over the 38th-ranked team in the country is the first-ever nationally-ranked win in Coker Women's Tennis history, getting a win in a crucial time to vie for positioning in the conference tournament
- Bellegy STILL has not dropped a singles match in over a month, with her last defeat coming on March 6th against Wingate (11-0 win streak)
